How the process works
Apply
January 1–31
Pick one field. Answer the prompt in your own words (300–800 words is plenty), and tell us how you'd use $500. It takes about an hour. No transcripts, test scores, or recommendation letters.
Review
February 1–14
At least two trained volunteer reviewers read every application using the same published rubric. Reviewers don't see your school name or location.
Conversation
February 15–21
Finalists have a relaxed 20-minute video call with two members of our team. It's a conversation, not an interview test.
Award
By February 28
Scholars are notified by email. Funds are paid directly to the school, program, or vendor for your plan — or to a parent or guardian for applicants under 18.
Mentor & share back
March–August
You're matched with a mentor for monthly conversations, and you send us a short update in the summer about what the $500 made possible.
How we score applications
- Spark (30%) — curiosity and initiative. What have you already tried, made, asked, or started?
- Plan (30%) — is the $500 tied to a clear next step that you can actually take this year?
- Need & reach (25%) — how much this support changes what's possible for you.
- Community (15%) — how you might bring others along.
Grades and polish are not on the rubric. Honest and specific beats impressive.
Questions
Who can apply?
Girls and young women ages 14–22 who live in the United States and are in high school, a GED program, community college, trade school, or the first two years of a four-year college. You don't need to be a citizen.
Can I apply to more than one field?
Apply to the one field that fits you best. If a reviewer thinks you'd be a stronger fit in another field, we'll move your application.
What can the $500 be used for?
Anything tied to your next step: a course or certification, a laptop or software, competition or exam fees, art supplies, a camp, transit to an internship, or materials for a project or small business.
I'm under 18. What do I need?
A parent or guardian's email. We'll let them know you applied and, if you're selected, pay the award through them or directly to the program.
Is the scholarship taxable?
Grants used for tuition, fees, books, and required supplies are generally not taxable; other uses may be. We'll share a written summary of your award for your records — check with a tax professional if you're unsure.
What if I don't get it?
Every applicant gets access to our resource library and an invitation to our spring mentor office hours. Many girls apply more than once; please do.
